Assignment 4:The Chosen Cartoon



Watch the following cartoons and choose a 2 min clip from either of them, the choice is yours! Remember to watch with the sound muted first so you can get ideas as to what sounds you wish to add.

Once you have chosen your 2 min clip, post a link of your cartoon to your blog, saying which 2 min section you will be working on. You are then ready to start your storyboards for Task 1

Assignment 4: The 8 Tasks

TASK 1: Individually watch the muted cartoon and plan a story board of the clip. Hand in your story boards.

TASK 2: Make a mind map using word or powerpoint (or make a mind map by hand) detailing the sounds and sfx you think you will need for your sound track. Highlight in one colour sounds/sfx you will record live yourself. Highlight in another colour sounds/sfx that you will search for online or from sound discs (this needs to be about 50/50) Print this off and hand it in.

TASK 3: Make a production schedule for the remaining weeks of this assignment: example below (due date is wed 28th march - gp X or fri 30th march - gp Y). Detail when you will be recording live SFX’s and what equipment you will need (remember people and where you record), time for editing recorded SFX’s, time to research and fine SFX’s and final editing time. Upload this to your blog.

TASK 4: Record your live SFX’s (you may work in pairs or three’s to assist each other with the recording process)

TASK 5: Edit your live SFX’s into the clips you need

TASK 6: Research and find SFX’s from sound discs or online 

TASK 7: Edit your SFX’s to match the cartoon. Save your soundtrack matched to the clip to the college harddrive no. 3. If possible upload it to youtube and include a link to this on your blog.

TASK 8: Write a blog post evaluating your overall work, how do you think your recording matches the cartoon etc. Remember the relationship between your SFX’s and the moving images, do they complement each other?
Tell me which SFX's you recorded and how you did it. Tell me which SFX's you got online and why. Are you happy with the overall result? If you were to do this assigment again would you do anything differently?

Assignment 4 – Creating a Soundtrack for Moving Image

This assignment will cover learning outcomes 1-4:
1-Understand the relationship between sound and picture in moving image productions. 
2-Be able to record audio for moving image. 
3-Be able to devise a soundtrack for a moving image project. 
4-Be able to produce a soundtrack for a moving image project

This assignment aims to give learner the opportunity to learn how best to plan, record and edit live and pre-recorded sounds, in order to create a soundtrack for existing visual footage.
 
Students will be shown a clip from a cartoon with the sound on mute. They must then plan a soundtrack, get all the sound sfx’s they need, edit them and match it to the cartoon. They must show all their planning. This assignment will be done individually, however students made pair up to help each other record and edit SFX’s needed.

Preparing to work with sound effects (SFX's)


In a blog post with the above title, answer the following questions:

1.   Why do you think we use SFX’s in TV and Film productions?
2.   What are the advantages of using SFX’s in TV and Film productions? What do they add to the overall production?
3.   What are the disadvantages of using SFX’s in TV and Film productions?
4.   What is the job description of a Foley artist?

Now use the internet to research how the following SFX’s might be made/recorded. Write this up in a blog post called ‘Recording SFX’s’.

§In your groups review your new footage.
§Discuss whether you have successfully eradicated the background noises or interferences.
§Then individually write a blog post detailing what you have discussed and learnt overall (an evaluation)

Go and re-film the scripted fictional news piece in the same 3 locations
